[i agree with the 'transformative' aspect getting lost somewhere, though i remember it was certainly present in a different form when i moved away from fandom and fan creation in the 2009-2012 period. i might suggest that the current form is just particularly hurtful, but sadly nothing new - which is more pessimistic than i wish to sound. i feel more optimistic that, unlike some previous fandom purity crusades and their associated purges and migrations, the fannish crowd is better prepared for evacuation and archival - not, of course, that i'm pleased that people are having to resort to such methods ]
