There's a strong sense among the people I know that the LotR make RPS more acceptable--in part because the actors were so huggy and smoochy with each other in all the extras Jackson so kindly gave us, and even in the media. There were some very strong antis in the fandom though--on morality grounds as opposed to personal squick (which is very different to me--i.e. the morality ones tended to say 'you should not do that' vs. 'I don't want to read it!).

I did hear from some friends years later that RPS became even more acceptable in Supernatural fandom because the only major slash option in the 'verse was, tah-dah, incest!

(Of course Boromir/Faramir incest fic also received its share of criticism.....).
